I always make it a point to stop by Hugo's Cellar whenever I'm up here. It is fine dining near perfection. I thought it was a little pricey at first, but compared to other restaraunts it is a good value. The reason is the salad comes with your meal. They even bring a platter of chocolate dipped fruits after dinner, not to mention the mini sherbet cones to clear your palate before your main course arrives. This last trip my Uncle had the Chillean Sea bass cooked in a herb / butter sauce. He let me try a piece and it melted in my mouth. I usually order the Rack of Lamb which is out of this world but decided to try something different. I had the Scallops cooked in a lemon, butter, wine sauce. They were very generous with the amount of scallops. I was so stuffed, I had to pass on dessert. We both had underestimated the size of the salad. They make it right in front of you and there were about 10 different toppings to choose from. We had everything except for the anchovies. This salad was a meal in itself. Oh yea, I forgot to mention I ordered a mushroom cap appetizer filled with crabmeat and hollaindaise sauce. We used the leftover crabmeat mixture as a spread for the assorted breads and crackers that were provided. Everything tasted great. With a $55 bottle of Clos Du Bois Merlot the bill came out to $148. It was well worth it. Hugo's is the reason why I always enjoy my stay in Vegas. Win or lose.    19216

This was a surprisingly huge disappointment. We wanted a nice, classic place downtown. A number of people recommended Hugo’s I expected classic and classy, good food and great service. I suggested my wife wear one of her nicer dresses and I wore a sport jacket. Unfortunately, I felt the staf was just going through the motions.
Yes my wife got the rose at the door. But we were led to a booth in a noisy and hectic room. Next to us was a table of 3 guys and one woman – the men all in jeans and T-shirts and two wearing baseball caps. Very few men wore jackets and the women were mostly dressed casually at best.
Our table was set for four, and our first clue was after 10 minutes we asked the bus boy to take the other two place settings away. The service was both rushed inattentive. The waiter would stop by, very quickly take the order or drop something off, and disappear.

We ordered a bottle of white wine from the wine steward and asked what reds he had by the glass to have with our entrée later on since we were considering the prime rib. He suggested a nice cab. When we placed our order, my wife and I both changed our mind to veal. When the entrée was delivered, we tried to get the wine steward to talk to him about ordering a bottle of lighter red, but we could not get his attention. Finally we asked the waiter to send the wine steward to our table. Instead, the wine steward walked over to our table and deliver one glass of the cab – I guess my wife and I were to split it - and left before we could say anything to him. Very, very poor.

The highly anticipated salad was unimpressive. I do not think the waiter was at our table more than 60 seconds. He had no personality and he threw the ingredients into the bowl and dropped the salads on our table and left. Taste was OK, but I could imagine how it could have been done – and maybe how it used to be done when staff used to care.

Other problems: The intermezzo was literally served at the same time as the entrée! Water glasses were left empty too long and too often. The Veal Oscar was OK, although served with tired looking piece of crab leg instead of lump – unimpressive. The vegetables were cold.

So at a cost (including a bottle of wine and one glass of wine) of $160 - I would give Hugos a C-minus at best.

My husband and I and five friends dined at Hugo's for a special Valentine's dinner. The food was wonderful and the service was great, until towards the end. The waiters were very eager to refill the Arkansas spring water glasses but NEVER asked if the beer drinkers would like a 2nd beer or refilled the soda's. VERY DISAPPOINTED!

I should have known when the waiter took our order and wanted the ladies to order first that the bill might be a problem. Well, it was. He brought us the bill for $322 all on one ticket. There were 7 people, paying 4 separate ways. I asked him to separate our tickets because we were all paying cash and were having trouble figuring our share. He said, "It's too late! You can charge it and have everyone figure it later." If I was a hateful person who doesn't mind causing a scene I would have done so but instead we sat at the table and stressed out over splitting this bill up several ways. It ended up ruining the feeling of this wonderful dinner and made several of us pissed off when leaving the restaurant. Not a feeling I like having after paying $100 for dinner.

All in all, the food was delicious but feel like the servers were trying to get us out quickly. If you eat at Hugo's just make sure you ASK for SEPARATE TICKETS if needed and ALWAYS ASK FOR ANOTHER DRINK IF YOU WANT ONE!

Hugo's is the top for buttering up your better half, she will love the little touches, the rose, the dim lighting and the sickly smiling faces of the waiters. You go to have a good meal and score big brownie points.
The atmosphere is a 10 with entertainment value to be had from the salad cart "show",the British wine waiter, and some waiter is alwys happy to oblige the punters by setting fire to something at the table.
Here is the itinery for the evening.
Arrive in dimly lit cellar, wife gets a Rose, seated with a flourish,3 waiters come and do their thing and you know that there is romance in the air, soft drinks, wine.and water on the table, into the starter, snails was the choice.
Red hot and still bubbling these ones came with a pasty topping.Taste fine, not the best but OK.Clear the table and the salad cart comes to town 4 differnt dressings 9 different toppings, the waiter goes through the list and you select to taste.Salad come the way you want it so no complaints here.
I go for the steak it was OK,not great, just a steak. The other half for the fish it was good but not the best we have had.Too full for the desserts now but we had them waved under our noses to tempt us.Then out come the cocolate covered fruit to finish.
Job done,£130.00 including tip and wine for 2 not bad.

This was the second time for us at Hugo's for dinner. Both times we were staying at THEhotel @ Mandalay Bay, and made the drive to downtown for this great restaurant! The martini presentation is terrific!! The rose is a nice touch, and the salad cart is great!! Last year we had chateaubriad and lobster for two ($55 per person), this year we had stuffed shrimp and swordfish. Both meals were fabulous...OK, maybe pricey, but you get a nice bread selection, salad (as small or as large as you want!), sorbet, the entree, and chocolate covered fruits for the price. Try going to a strip hotel restaurant (which are a la carte) and getting what you get at Hugos for the same price....you can't. This is a wonderfully romantic restaurant for couples, and you don't need a special occasion to enjoy it. It is definately on our list as a restaurant to frequent!!    15922

My wife and I loved the Hugo experience. The perfect place for a romantic dinner. My wife was presented a rose when we arrived and we were led to a secluded table. The staff was very attentive and professional.

For starters we had the crab stuffed mushroom (excellent) - The salad cart delivers a meal in itself and was a highlight of the dinner. My wife's raspberry chick was to die for and my fillet was vey good and cooked to perfection. Chocolate covered strawberries came with dinner but we had to also have the banana's Foster (scrumptious).

The next time we come back to Vegas we will definitely be making a reservation at Hugo's.

We went for our anniversary expecting a quiet & romantic atmosphere. We forgot the National Rodeo was in town & they turned out in numbers to eat at Hugo's that night. The patrons were so loud that we couldn't even talk to each other across the table. Service was great but our steaks were not cooked as we ordered. We had planned on getting a bottle of wine but by-passed it when we realized this was not the atmosphere we were expecting to enjoy. The restaurant needs to post a sign at the entrance for those adults who don't know how to behave in a fine dining establishment. It should read "Silence is Golden". May try it again sometime just to see if it's different, but unsure.    13565

Did not care for this place. It was loud. Service was snooty. Felt like I was bothering them all the time. Tried to get in a couple hours early (had an 8:30 reservation) and was just told "no, come back at your reservation time". Very rude. Food was so-so. I ordered a crab dish and it was shredded canned crab. Husbands beef was tasteless. Wine list was short and no good wines to be found on it. Just not a good experience.    13586

Tried Hugo's for the first time on my wife's birthday. Lately we've been dining out less. It seems we're always paying more for less & no one is knocking our socks off. Hugo's knocked our socks off. It was great. I got the filet mignon & my wife got the roasted duckling which was flambeed at our table. The prices scared us initially but they were worth it. Meals came with bread, salad, sorbet, potato & vegetable, & chocolate desserts. Nothing is ala carte. Water glasses were always kept full. Waiters were fine - they laughed & joked with us. Salad was dynamite. Only problem was we couldn't finish our meals - portions are not small. Next time we'll probablys split an entree. With a basic $18 bottle of wine out tab came to $113, including tip. We look forward to our next visit.    13719

We whent for dinner, there was five of us and not one of us were happy w/ the entrees or service. The waiter was to the point of being rude, not handing us a knife for our entree, just waving it at us until we took it from him and that was one of the few time he even came around. The steaks we ordered were cooked improperly the shrimp had little flavor and we did not care for the pesto chicken. Besides it was a bit pricey. I must give them credit for the salad it was fabulous (no cooking or talent involed there.) DON"T WAIST YOUR TIME OR MONEY!!!    11853

Visited Easter Sunday evening. Reservations taken and seated promptly. Very good restaurant. Wine seward was very knowledgable and helped us pick a very good inexpensive wine. Waiter was also good. They hand make all salads tableside and the choices are many. The food was very good and definitely a good value for the $$. Cheaper than strip gourmet rooms, without that much difference in food quality or service. The rose they give is a nice touch to the table. Definitely a must visit.    11357

My wife and I went to Hugo's on March 17, going in at 6:00 we were told that there was nothing available until 9:00. Not being sports fans, we didn't realize that Las Vegas would be so crowded because of March Madness, and it was St. Patrick's day. We decided to wait, and went to the Golden Gate to ease our hunger with their shrimp cocktail. We'd never been there before, and wanted to try something new. Oh my goodness, what a surprise this was! We returned a little before 9:00, and waited for our table, which wasn't a big deal since we were early. We were seated at 9:05, and my wife (along with all the women) recieved a red rose. There was a bit of sticker shock with the prices, only because I know that many restaraunts have gone ala carte. This isn't one of them, and the prices are about right for what you get. Not only is it not ala carte, but the salad, made at your table to your order, and a tray of chocolate dipped fruit and whipped cream are included.    11002

My husband and I went to this restaurant for dinner after a formal party so he was in a tuxedo and I a gown. The service was excellent and each lady gets a rose at the door. I have no complaints about the waiter he was very attentive and made sure our glasses were always full. My husband ordered the filet and I ordered the chicken with tomato pesto sauce (BAD IDEA) I took a couple bites and noticed it was making me feel sick. It ruined the night because we immediately got the check and was on our way home when we had to stop on the side of the road for me to vomit (and yes it got all over my gown). Im not sure if it was the chicken or the pesto but stand clear of it! I most likey would not dine there again!    11010

dropped in on a whim and after the initial sticker shock on the menu prices (we didn't expect these prices on Freemont St.) we had a truely outstanding meal. This is a hidden jem. From the time you enter the dining room until you leave the service is impeccable....spectacular salad...the "petite" prime rib will feed a family....a good value despite the menu prices...    9329

I had heard many comments about Hugo's over the years. This year we stayed at the Four Queens for the first time. Did most of our gambling there and ended up being comped for dinner.

Everything about the place was great. From the waiters to the chefs. Service was outstanding. The rose for the ladies is neat. Food was way above par. If you haven't been here, you need to give it a try. One of the truely outstanding resturants in downtown Vegas.

This long awaited meal was quite a disappointment. We were seated then had to wait too long for a drink. I originally passed on a beer hoping to order a bottle of wine with dinner. When I realized how long that will take I decided to get a beer and I'd have been more successful flagging down a cab from our table than our waiter. I don't think its nearly as nice an ambiance as purported. Food was good but overhyped and not worth the high price. If you're looking for a nice quiet dinner for two with great food and service at a reasonable price, walk the 5 mins to the Pullman Grill at MSS! It's much better on all counts.    11818

Vastly overated. Nice room. The staff try hard but they're definitely not "major league" caliber. The cooking is NOT really very good here. I'd give it a 5 out of 10. The menu descriptions SOUND great, but they simply don't have the chefs who can carry off complicated dishes. If you've eaten in other great restaurants the food here will be a little dissapointing. And it ain't that cheap.    8096

Heard many positive comments about Hugo's and decided to see for ourselves. Made on-line reservations a month in advance and was promptly seated upon arrival. Stuffed mushroom caps and shrimp cocktail appetizers were excellent and the renowned salad cart did not disappoint, honey/orange vinaigrette was superb. Mini sherbet cone before the meal (to cleanse your palet) was a first for us. Dad had the duck which was flambayed tableside, very tasty; I had the chilean sea bass which was OK; girlfriend and mom split the crab which was an enormous amount and very good. Skipped dessert because we were so full but the complimentary platter of treats at the end was a welcome surprise. Dessert tray did look tempting though! Kind of a pricey place, but definitely worth the experience.    7682

Out of the way but worth the trip. Six of us went with reservations. This basement brick walled restaurant will offer at least three waitstaff for each table. Plenty of service here.
The chilled shrimp appetizer is a must. One entre was better then the next. All wine prices were reasonable. I saw none that were too overpriced. For those worried about choosing the wrong type, the somlier(wine steward) was helpful, happy, and hospitable------dont hesitate to ask for his help; I know wine and I asked his assistance.
This is a dining experience. Aside from the $40 cost to get from the "main" hotel area to the Downtown district, the cost of the meal was reasonable.
Save room for desert.

Hugo's

Month Visited: 02/03 - Undecided - Dinner

Hugo's came highly recommended as a place to get a great meal with great atmosphere. The atmosphere is definately there--very different from most Vegas places. I thought it was a bit pricey, but when you consider that your meal includes everything but drinks, it helps on the bottom line. The salad cart is the best thing this restaurant has going for it. Best salad I've ever had. The steak, however, was very average and nothing to brag about. Mine was actually overcooked and a bit dry. My sister's scallop's had no taste, and she returned them to the kitchen. Too pricey to eat something you're not completely pleased with. The dessert included with the meal had the biggest chocolate dipped strawberries I've ever had--and quite tasty, given their size. The complimentary dessert my sister received as a consolation for her poor scallops was delicious. So, I give Hugo's a 10 on the salad and the dessert, with a 6 on the entree.    6239

Hugo Cellar - Big disappointment after reading wonderful reviews. Hubby had the sirloin and I had Cellar's chicken. Thought both were just OK. Did not like the tomato pesto stuffed in the chicken. The side vegetables were way underdone and inedible. The escargot was very good. The salad was good. The dipping fruit consisted of 2 chocolate covered strawberries, 2 figs and 2 pieces of dried fruit. Couldn't make out what kind of fruit it was. The crème brulee was good except they scorched the brown sugar so it tasted burnt. Scraped it off and the crème part was good. They seated a couple about 15 minutes after us and that couple had their odered taken first and served their salad first. The worst Raspberry Maritni I've ever had. Won't eat there again.

THE SOUTH TEXAS BUNCH HAS VISITED MOST OF THE TOP DINNING FACILITIES IN LAS VEGAS. HUGO'S JUST WENT TO #1 IN OUR BOOK. JOHN THE WINE CONNOISSUER WILL DELITE YOU WITH HIS KNOWLWDGE TO START OFF. THEN ONE WAITER BRINGS THE SALAD CART (FANTASTIC), ONE WILL BE YOUR MAIN SERVER, AND ANOTHER KEEPS THE TABLE CLEAN AND REFILS GLASSES. THE LAMB IS TO DIE FOR (INDIONESIAN). THE "FAT" NEW YORK WAS PERFECT. WITH WINE, $225.00 WAS WELL WORTH IT. WILL BE THERE NEXT TRIP WITHOUT FAIL. YOU WILL PROBABLY NOT WANT TO TAKE THE KIDS, ITS DARK & QUIET (NICE!).    5050

Wow! What a wonderful experience. One of the nicest people I have ever met (Jean, the hostess) warmly assisted me with planning my proposal to my girlfriend, now fiancee. She had us in the corner booth and we had the proposal arranged with our three waiters. I got up to "use the bathroom" after we ordered a bottle of wine, when I slipped the ring to Jean and she passed it on to one of the waiters. The bartender and I shot the sh!t for a couple of minutes. I went back to the table and the waiter came back three minutes later (which seemed like three hours!) with the ring in the box on top of a silver platter with rose petals! Yeah, she didn't see it coming. Nothing against the Four Queens, but she would not have believed that I would propose at that hotel. Everyone clapped, we kissed, she cried, but now it was time for the fun part of the evening...dinner. We chose our own salad off of the salad cart, which was great, and then had a filet and Chicken Hugo. I was very impressed. We will definitely return. Thanks, Jean and all of the waiters, for a most memorable experience.    6484

Ok...So Hugo's doesn't have the best food (entrees), but the rolling salard cart is awesome. The lady gets a rose to start the evening, which saved me from coming up with countless sweet nothings. Try one of "Deans" excellent sour apple martinis. They are served in a glass vase (on ice) with a separate martini glass (talk about some good service).

I would definitely say that Hugo's is an above average resteraunt, overall, but it's food is certainly not on par with the likes of Emeril's in MGM. Don't be mistaken,, Hugo's is a good quality, great service and above average food place to eat dinner.
