Month Visited: 05/04 - Bad Meal - Dinner

I have been to Olives for dinner three times because one of my traveling partners has enjoyed it very much in the past - apparently, the 1st time she went she had a fabulous meal - which they have since removed from the menu.
My food has been at best OK every time I have been there. The service has gotten worse with each visit, last year our waiter was inattentive and downright condescending. I go to Vegas every spring with girlfriends, there are four of us and for the last three years I've had to endure Olives, but not this year, even the one holdout has had enough. Perhaps the waiter was so bad because he didn't like waiting on women, too bad he didn't know that two of us were former bartenders and for good service our minimum tip is 30 percent - oh well, I'll take my business elsewhere!!

I won't comment on cost, it's Vegas. Our lunch was well served and overall decent. Not great, barely good. I had the "Cubano" sandwich, which was way OVERPOWERED by what seemed to be McDonalds pickles!!! I'll admit to having never visited Cuba, but I don't believe cheap, mass-produced, pickles are part of the ethnic fare. The meal for me was ruined by "pickle picking" to make the sandwich edible. Also, the spicy dipping sauce provided for the sandwich also seemed to me to be strangely Mcdonaldish??? My wife's salad was very fresh and well seasoned. Best part of the meal was people watching.    10867

Month Visited: 11/03 - Undecided - Dinner

The main drawback is that it is inconsistant. I've eaten there 4-5 times and each time varied alot. The best experience was the first time. We dropped by and although it was a busy weekend evening we somehow managed to end up seated center of the balcony with the best view of the fountains. It was almost magical and we were so thrilled with the entire dining experience. The breads and olives and tapenade were fantastic. Dinner was excellent. everything was perfect. So of course we wanted to return again. Big let down. The next time we had reservations, but still had to wait over half an hour to get squeezed into a tiny uncomfortable booth. While at the bar the manager or hostess offered us some drinks on the house since we were forced to wait. The drinks were decent, but at the end of the evening the two 12 dollar drinks appeared on our bill and the waiter was indignant about having to check with the host to get them removed. The food was awful too. I ordered halibut and it was slimy and really fatty. I don't think it was halibut at all! This time they didn't bring us bread or olives until we asked and even then it took a long time. The ceasar salad I ordered was wilted and so salty. The waiter didn't even notice that I ate only two small bites of it, normally a good waiter would ask about that. It was so loud that night that my bf and I just gazed at each other throughout the meal after giving up on shouting at each other in order to have a conversation. Big disapointment. We should have learned from that I guess. We returned a few more times and decided to try lunch and each time eliminated items that we liked from the menu and grew more and more disapointed. The hostess was incredibly snotty and seemed much more interested in passing her phone number to rich looking business men than doing her job and seating people or taking reservations. She rolled her eyes anytime someone would ask her for service or if she was on the phone. We went ahead and went to the bar to wait and she practically had a fit when she brought a small group of business men to the bar to wait (they didn't have reservations) and practically shouted at us to move from the bar so they could sit on the stools. We asked the bartender if the bar was reserved and he looked just as confused as we were and assured us we could stay. The bartender made up for the hostesses rotten behavour and was professional and courteous. Even the business men joked with us about how rotten she was.

Anyways. The main line is that on a good weathered day sitting outside on the balcony is the best. However inside is so noisy and chaotic. Also uncomfortable and very ugly interior, at least when you are on the balcony you get to see the beautiful fountains instead of the junk-yard chic decor inside. The food is also kind of a let down for the price, the only item that is worth the cost and consistantly delicious was the fig proscuitto flatbread. So in the future the only time I will return is for a balcony seat flatbread lunch.

Had reservations for a late night dinner. We reserved a window seat but
were saddened that my girl and i couldn't sit next to each other. That was
a first for us at any Vegas restaurant. The place was VERY noisey and
made conversation from across a table difficult. The service was bad. At
first we thought our waiter was just bad or snooty but it turned out he was
just pretty busy and getting ready to close. However he kept forgetting to
take care of the things we asked for. The bus boy was also difficult. The
food however was excellent. We ordered the foie gras for a starter and the
fig and prosciutto flat bread for our meal. Both items looked small but
were very filling and just incrediblely tasty. Wonderful dishes. We also
enjoyed the black and green olive pate which was served to us late.
Strange that the service started off slow but we felt rushed as plates and
glasses were removed before we were completely finished. We tipped
appropriately. One note: it is not possible to hear the music from the
fountain show just outside but you do get a good view.

I wanted to come here for the patio to eat while watching the Bellagio fountains. Although, I went on a day which thunderstorms decided to ruin the plans. We sat inside the restuarant, but I did not get a glimpse of the water from where I was sitting. The place can get very crowded. The food is for sure overpriced. If you cannot get a patio seat, this place is not worth it. Go somewhere else, like Jasmine or the Fontana Bar down the hallway.    8829

Olives in Bellagio

Month Visited: 08/03 - Good Meal - Lunch

Olives lives up to the quality standard set by its illustrious neighbours in Bellagio, and does it at a lower price (still fairly expensive though). It seems like lunch is the time to eat here, the atmosphere is a little more casual and the crowd (at least on a Sunday afternoon) a little more manageable. We had the flatbread pizza, which was delicious, and the chocolate chip cookies for dessert, which were also delicious once I picked all the nuts out (nuts in a chocolate chip cookie, what's this world coming to). The service was okay, our server wasn't overworked and she seemed eager to help. Plus, we were on the patio, which has "misters" to keep things cool and probably the best view of the fountain anywhere in Bellagio. Overall, a very positive experience.    9491

Month Visited: 05/03 - Bad Meal - Dinner

I had read a mix of good and bad on this restaurant, but decided to trust "the good" and assume the bad was just an off night or picky diners. Wish I'd heeded the warning. First of all, when I made reservations, I asked for a patio seat as it was an anniversary dinner...due to the view of the fountains. I was told we could get put our name on the list, but no guarantees. I did so, and when we got there discovered the patio was reserved for a party. Why didn't the hostess tell me that for the day I reserved it? I could have gone to the other restaurants Bellagio has with views. Oh well. The restaurant was beyond noisy. I had hoped for that romantic dinner, but that vanished when my husband and I..at a small two seater...couldn't hear each other. Our waiter appeared, took our drink orders and vanished. This was a theme for the night. While people around us who arrived later then us got their food, drinks refilled, left...we would still wait on our waiter and our food. I was furious, given the price you'd think they'd really want the 20% off the bill, but I guess he didn't care. I became truly jealous of the diners around us who had prompt but unobtrusive service. I ordered the Ceasar salad and husband ordered the Beef Carpaccio. My salad actually tasted salted...oversalted. YUCK. I love salt, so for me to say that is not a good thing. Husband liked his carpaccio, but it's preferable room temp instead of chilled. For an entree I had the Osso Bucco and husband had Halibut. I only had about 1/4 of mine b/c AGAIN, dripped in salt. MEat was tender..but over sauced and of course that pesky sodium problem. Husband's impression of his Halibut was that he could have done better at home..and he's no chef. We didn't even stay for dessert...which is one of our favorite parts of a special meal out. I've heard great things about the Olives on the east coast. I think this is just, once again, a case of a great restuarant being poorly repeated in Vegas.    7586

The worst dining experience I have ever endured in Las Vegas. The service was slow and inattentive. We were brought the wrong entree, sent it back, and it was still on our bill. While we were trying to make the most of our meal, the staff made us move our table to squeeze in a large party next to us. The servers at the nearby tables were constantly bumping into us and our table. The atmosphere would have been better in an elementary school cafeteria.    9828

it's a good restaurant. Great view of the Bellagio lake, honestly delicious
food, NOT overpriced. Just fantastic! IAnd by eating here you can avoid
those pompous, overpriced Italian guys over at Circo.

I read some of these bad reviews, but our experience was quite good. I was very impressed with the pasta that we had, and the bread and crackers served before the meal were well chosen. The menu selection was somewhat light, but what was chosen created some variety. Portions were very large, even at lunch. Prices were reasonable, and we didn't have to wait long at all to be seated. I would certainly hit this one again.    8693

Olives
OK call us suckers for watching Iron Chef America, but when we heard that Todd English was the owner of the Olives chain, we just had to give it a try. Since my wife and I had just gotten married, we decided to make this place our special dinner. However, we came away somewhat disappointed.

We had made reservations and upon our arrival we were asked, “ I suppose you want a window seat” by the hostess. Although it was not our original intent we liked the idea and took her up on it. But, we ended up sitting at some half-assed table where you kind of had a view of the lake but it was obviously obstructed. The funny thing was that there were two tables in back of us with unobstructed views. But we let that slide thinking that you probably needed to make reservations for a window seat up front. (So much for being nice and cordial though.)

We contemplated getting a bottle of wine, but quickly determined that the mark-up charges we too high (guess that means we’ll be well staying away from The "Light" nightclub as well). I settled for a Mint Julep that was advertised on the menu, since I had never had one and the Bourbon they were using was Knob Creek. The only caveat of the drink was that it contained club soda and no sugar, which (as our server informed me) was the Olives twist (Mint Julep with club soda and no sugar = Olives “twist”?) Hmmmm?

My wife had the cheese Ravioli and I was a bit more adventurous and tried the Wild Boar pasta. To our dismay (and surprise) both weren’t that great at all! The Ravioli was average and the Boar…well, was bland. My first experience with Boar was at some hole-in- the wall in Sienna, Italy. Each bite of that dish made me want to go back to the kitchen and kiss the Chef. Naturally, I expected the same from Olives. But this bland concoction, spawned from the brain of Iron Chef Todd English was a true disappointment.

We should have listened to the less publicized voices in our heads and gone to Aureole, Lutèce, or Nobhill for our special dinner. But in the end we just had to try an Iron Chef Restaurant. Although Todd English seems like a friendly guy who can do wonders with food in one hour’s time. Perhaps he should consider passing that attitude and knowledge on to his staff that run his restaurant at the Bellagio.

We ate at Olives last September and had an exceptional meal. The patio outside is fun, but the atmosphere inside is also warm and friendly. The menu has surely changed since we visited, but it is Mediterranian, so if you are adventurous you might end up with something you don't care for. All that remember is that the flatbreat was a wonderful appetizer and the dessert -- some sort of a chocolate souffle -- was to die for. Service was fine, but not as good as it could have been. The price was actually quite reasonable, compared to some of the other restuarants we visited.    6102

My wife and I always seem to land at Olives for lunch on our trips to Vegas. The atmosphere is relaxed and if the weather is not too hot you can sit on the patio overlooking the lake and fountain of Bellagio. The entrees are varied and change enough to make it more interesting and they are wonderful. The service is usually good, but servers tend to let themselves get bogged down by people who need everything described in minute detail because they don't see anything they recognize on this very unique menu (this has happened at least twice). The open kitchen is a nice touch and the decor is one of a kind. By the way, they used to serve a variety of olives with the bread. We heard that because some moron choked on an olive pit that they can only serve olive "pate" now. Isn't it ridiculous that we have to suffer because of some idiot who can't properly chew food and sues the restaurant?
No, Olives is not cheap, but look around you. It's vegas. It's Bellagio. Get over it. Besides, it's worth the price.

We decided to eat at Olives based on the numerous rave reviews we have read on several boards and web-sites. We were not impressed to say the least. The atomosphere was pretentious and the waiter snotty. Acted as if he didn't have the time to serve us even though it wasn't too crowded. OK, the flat bread pizza was good, but it wasn't worth the price and quite small. Also had the spaghetti. Just awful. Couldn't even eat it. The sauce was like tomatoe flavored water - very runny and there were no spices in it. The bread was good, but I prefer my bread warmed, not like it just came out of the bag. The olive pate was very good, but quite salty. Also had the creme brulee for dessert. It was OK, nothing to rave about. All this for $70. Ridiculous for lunch and for what we got. To each there own, but they are better, more reasonalbe priced restuarants in Las Vegas.    3934

Had luch here on the last day of my trip. I would have loved to sit on the patio but it was considered too windy. I had an unusual take on sloppy joes made of an assortment of meats, BBQ pork with guacamole, chicken with apples, and veal with roarted peppers. All in all a great meal topped off with an incredible dessert of a roasted bannana tiramisu. It makes me want to go back just writing about it.    1675

We dined on the patio overlooking the fountains and it was a wonderful experience. The weather was perfect, even though the temperature was around 100 that day, there was a nice breeze coming from the fountains. Very romantic and well worth it. Not too pricey as compared to some of the higher end restaurants; I think aoubt $80 for 2 with a drink or two. Get there early--we went around 5:30 or 6:00, which is way earlier than we normally eat, but we did not have to wait at all.    874

Olives in Bellagio

Month Visited: 00/00 - Good Meal - Lunch
