Lotus, The - For Lunch

Month Visited: 05/11 - Undecided

Wasn't as good as I expected. I heard a lot of good things about this restaurant. It was very clean and the server was attentive, but...now a days, restaurants have both regular and low sodium soy sauce. I ordered the Seafood Supreme, which looked great on paper, but didn't turn out so great. It was supposed to be a sweet and spicy. Very sweet, not so spicy. It also came covered with fried noodles. I am not a big fan of the fried noodles and had to scrape them off. Instead o the women offering to make me a new dish without them, she offered me a plate so that I could scrape them on to it. That is a first.
The only reason I will go back is because it is close to home and I don't want ot drive around Vegas looking for Chinese food. Also, the prices are very reasonable.

Lotus, The - For Please Select

Month Visited: 07/05

Lotus is a great little out of the way Chinese restaurant, lesser known to the larger crowds in Las Vegas, Summerlin (30-40 minutes away) or the newer areas of Southern Henderson such as Anthem, but it is well known and deeply loved and appreciated by its local clientele, which on weekdays consists of about 50% business clientele because of its proximity to downtown Henderson (see downtownhenderson.com for Lotus's and other menus) Lotus is located next door to the Henderson Justice Facility and directly across from the Henderson Convention Center which is right next to Henderson City Hall. The City of Henderson is notably the largest employer of Henderson with well over 2000 employees. Non-government business clientele are those of the downtown Henderson real estate, financial, legal and medical communities (St. Rose Hospital is located less than a quarter mile away) which can often be found dining here as well. Historically, the downtown Henderson business community is more laid back than its faster-paced and larger neighbor down the hill, Las Vegas. The trees lining Water Street, the narrower streets than Vegas, the old-fashioned 2 and 3-digit addresses of downtown Henderson, and the slower pace of this area all tend to contribute to a more relaxed and friendly atmosphere, even before entering the dining establishment. The relaxed mood of downtown Henderson is all around you. The Lotus serves a wide variety of good solid Chinese fare, most notably the combination dinners for groups of four or more. What stands out as especially delightful is just about any entree from the "Lotus House Specialties" page (the 4th page of the menu) with such consistently delicious offerings as Orange Chicken, Chicken Kabob, Chicken Katsu, Tongkatsu Pork, Beef Kabob, Orange Blossom Tender Beef, Mandarin Pork Chops, Walnut Shrimp (with honey walnuts), Lotus Steak with special sauce (New York Strip), Peking Duck, and Seafood in a Basket which is a crispy mix of shrimp, scallops and a fillet with vegetables. Lotus serves up a terrific Sautéed Flounder or Filet of Flounder with creamed corn too. There is a small but well-stocked bar with a separate entrance which is part of the restaurant, so most brands of beer and mixed drinks are available here too.
The only problem, a small one, is with the fried rice, mainly the pork fried rice. I just don't like their fried rice here. Perhaps its because I never seem to get there when its fresh, or maybe the meat in the rice is a little overcooked from the constant heating, but after more than 3 dozen visits myself, I have learned to ask them to hold the fried rice from anything I order. But to make up for it, the wonderful blend of flavors of the popular meats (chicken, beef and pork) and the fresh and tasty seafood entrees are given the utmost care and come close to perfection with most entrees. As seems traditional with most Chinese restaurants, the most affordable meals of course are the lunch specials, averaging $5 to $6 and available until 3 pm. However, the serving sizes of lunch specials are smaller and generally not as spectacular as the House Specialties I mentioned above.
