Hush Puppy, The - For Dinner

Month Visited: 08/06 - Good Meal
We were at a family reunion and had been running up and down the strip all day. Needless to say, we were tired and hungry. Someone mentioned the Hush Puppy and catfish, so we decided to give it a try (we LOVE catfish). We got there about 9:40 pmm but they told us to come on in. The hostess and waitress were so friendly (my friend asked them how they could be so friendly so late in the day!). We all ordered the catfish - thinking we were probably not going to get too much - low price, late hour, etc. What a surprise! The salad bar was good (considering they were breaking it down for closing). The diet went out the window when our waitress brought the basket of hush puppies - Lord, have mercy! I ordered the greens (which I usually don't do) and was very pleased with them. We were surprised and pleased to be served the best catfish filets! Even the tartar sauce was good!(or the "bomb" as we used to say!) We are from San Diego and Los Angeles, but the next time we are in Vegas - you can count on us making more than one trip to Hush Puppy!

Very dirty and the food was so poor tasting and very greasy. Salad bar very messy and just overall nasty.

On Thursdays, Hush Puppy opens up almost their entire seafood menu in one all-you-care-to-eat extravaganza that only costs $15 per person including tax and a (non-alcoholic) beverage. This includes your fill of a small but serviceable salad bar, french fries, fried shrimp, cold boiled shrimp, catfish in your choice of farm-raised or fresh, fried oysters and clam strips (just like Howard Johnson's used to sell back east when I was a kid). There are different specials most days that vary from location to location, but one that sounds especially promising - and that I will try soon - is all-you-can-eat crab legs. Oh, and please don't let me forget to add the hush puppies and honey butter that are brought to your table before you order. They're delicious, and it's very hard to keep from eating too many of those and getting full before you get started on your main course. The atmosphere is very comfortable, with quiet music from a local radio station playing in the background.

The wait staff is constantly going from table to table to see if anyone is hungry for more delicious seafood or needs a drink refilled. An added bonus, for me at least, is that Hush Puppy carries Coke products rather than Pepsi because I love Diet Coke with my seafood but I hate Diet Pepsi with a passion.

The best way to "do" this place is to save your appetite for as long as possible and go in ready for a serious dinner, since that's the only time they're open. You will get your money's worth and walk out feeling full and content. Oh, and be sure to tip high. The waiters and waitresses really do hustle and I have yet to encounter one who slacked off. They deserve the extra income.

This is, without a doubt, one of the best-kept secrets in a town that has almost as many buffets as residents.

Dinner was excellent. Half-rack of ribs and Louisiana style shrimp were very good. Fried green tomatoes were outstanding. Nothing wrong with this southern style restaurant. We'll go back.

We like The Hushpuppy on W. Charleston because it's off the beaten path and away from the Strip. Although still busy, it's worth every minute spent there.
