Carmel Room - For Dinner

My friend took me there for dinner and it was fantastic. It's a nice blend of classic Vegas style fine dining (with certain items prepared table side, outstanding gourmet presentations and steaks and one of the most reasonably priced large wine lists in the city.
We were there on Thursday and they featured a dinner that had produce from the Santa Monica Farmer's market. The three course tasting menu was only $45!! I ordered the Market menu and my friend ordered the porterhouse. ($35) For my appetizer, a tomato salad starter was really nice presentation. The waiter brought a bowl of different varieties of heirloom tomatoes to the table, explained them and let me pick which ones I wanted. He then carved them table-side and put them on a pre-arranged plate with greens, manchego cheese and roasted peppers.
My friend started with a shrimp cocktail, unadventurous but a good test of the metal of a nice place. It was $12, the shrimp were very very large, the cocktail sauce was nice and spicy with little cucumber chunks in it and the presentation was nice. Shrimp had definitely been boiled with some spices like they do on the east coast. It was a good change from the watery, weak and flavorless shrimp cocktails you get around town.
My friend got the porterhouse, which was excellent and cooked as ordered. I had the grilled lamb chops from the market menu. They had this really beautiful two tone squash, roasted peppers and a violet mustard glaze. Also fantastic.
For dessert the waiter had recommended a souffle at the beginning of the meal. We ordered a combination chocolate and grand marnier one, and my tasting menu also came with the special menu dessert of a peach cobbler with home made cinnamon ice cream.
The souffle was perfect and served with whipped cream, chocolate sauce and a nice white custard sauce.
The cobbler was the coolest looking cobbler I've ever seen. A cylinder of peach slices were stacked on a plate, topped with a nice crunchy mix and served free-standing with really good ice cream.
Our waiter Frank was nice, on top of the details and had a good wine recommendation, (Whitehall Lane Cabernet) that didn't break our budget. The Maitre d' and Hostess were also really warm as well. I will definitely be back.

In one word..."WOW!!" The spinach salad was sensational, the filet was fabulous, and the crème brulee was to die for. Making this experience even more enjoyable and memorable was the most professional and courteous wait staff I've ever seen...seriously. I've been to Vegas a total of 7 times and have eaten at the Carmel Room during my last 4 visits. I've thrown away more money in 10 minutes at the $5 Black Jack tables than I spent on this amazing dinner experience. Now that I think about it...I probably saved money eating there instead of gambling and certainly enjoyed myself a great deal more. Bottom line...I've frequented many fine dining establishments but the Carmel Room has my absolute HIGHEST recommendation. Try it out...you won't be disappointed.

Summary - elegant room with very good service, but the food was not up to par. We ordered a salad to share, but were told they would charge $5 to split it for us, but the waiter offered to bring a secon plate at no charge. The salad very small for the price. My wife had salmon on a plank served with only a wedge of lemon and a small slice on onion. I had seafood over fettucine in a boring cream sauce. The chef apparently is afraid to use spices/herbs or even ground pepper. Very disappointing.

Very good Dover sole. Pricey and a little too much on the butter@! But bery tasty and the Wisconsin chedder potatoes and to die for! Service is good as log as they are NOT understaffed - this is our 20th visit - we go often and most times it is right on the mark and very pleasant.

The food and service was superb. The chef brought us a soup he had created that was fantastic. This restaurant is top-notch and we will definately be back soon. I enjoyed the Beef Wellington and it was fabulous. My spouse had a fabulous Sea Bass dish. Please go and enjoy this delicious cuisine.

Most impressive. A great meal. A bit pricey but coupled with the awesome service and knowledgeable staff well worth it. Very nice dating destination too. Cozy and intimate.
