JoŽl Robuchon in MGM Grand - For Dinner

Month Visited: 08/08 - Undecided

The meal was okay. We opted for the 16 course menu at $385 per person. What really turned me off was the caviar course (bleh). I'm sorry, but asparagus and cauliflower don't go well with caviar. The presentations were pretty, and the desserts heavenly. But the cost of $10 bottles of water, and $19 for a SMALL martini really turned me off. For a full review with pictures of the place, we posted some online at www.omaha-rounders.com/anniversary/

JoŽl Robuchon at The Mansion in MGM Grand - For Dinner

Month Visited: 01/06 - Bad Meal

Sorry, but some of the starstruck reviews I've read about this place strike me as intimidated customers afraid to admit that what they were served was VASTLY substandard. It reminds me of Modern Art museums, where the intimidated masses, so sure that THEY are the blind ones, who can't see that a few soup cans welded together don't *really* symbolize "Man's inhumanity to man" that they go home raving about the brilliant "art" they've seen.

In short, Robuchon at the Mansion is a JOKE. I've eaten at 3 or 4 top-rated restaurants in Paris, and Robuchon doesn't even register on the same *scale* Bland, silly in many cases and totally uninspiring. In his lust to avoid ANYTHING that may have been done before ("inovators" don't do that, doncha know) Robuchon sends out unlikely and in most cases most unfortunate dishes that defy the imagination in their blandness.

The main course, for example (he cooks EXACTLY the same dishes every....single...night, by the way, so you'd think he'd get it right) is a boring slice of veal with a few drops of insipid demi-glace (slightly thickened broth, in a nutshell). I've had more flavorful bites at the Sizzler, and I'm serious about that. And the veal was one of the better dishes.

We paid $600 for two, with two VERY modest wines, something you must settle for, since they overcharge to a CRIMINAL level for wines. An 82 Cheval Blanc, for example, a bottle I bought at auction for $600 recently..was....wait for it.....$3,300. This is criminal robbery...they are charging you $2,700 extra to drink this wine in their restaurant....all the while eating food that NEVER....not once, reaches the level of good...let alone exceptional.

If you want fairly good, and more classic French, try the Eifel Tower at Paris Hotel. I have some gripes with the Eifel Tower, but the food, despite a few quirky flaws, is LIGHT YEARS better (and less than 1/2 as expensive) as Robuchon.

Believe me...I'm not some irrate ex-employee (haha, the place hasn't been open long enough to *have* any irrate ex-employees)...I'm just a guy who LOVES French cuisine, and cooks it pretty well himself (certainly better than Robuchon)

I honestly can't think of a single thing we had that was anything more than a 5 out of 10...except the bread, which was great.

AVOID THIS TOURIST TRAP at all costs, trust. me.

JoŽl Robuchon at The Mansion in MGM Grand - For Dinner

Month Visited: 11/05 - Good Meal

This is a restaurant for SERIOUS foodies. The most expensive and easily BEST meal I have ever eaten. When you consider that meals here are $135 (5 course) and $325 (full 16 course tasting menu), and I plan to return as soon as I can afford it, this says something. Even the bread, of which there are about a dozen varieties, including phenomenal brioche, lives up to the high standards of some of the best bread you'll ever eat. I hit the restaurant the height of truffle season, so I got an added bonus of white and black truffles in many of the dishes. The asparagus with caviar took vegetables to a new level. The homard lobster with saffron butter is literally cooked on your plate by pouring a rich broth over it, which melts the saffron butter and cooks the lobster. Exquisite! And TWO desserts, a starfruit sorbet that was a piece of performance art in itself (set in a dry-ice mist) and a chocolate confection with cappuchino gelato. I struggled gallantly to finish it all, and just managed!

The wines are available by the glass, and both the reisling and Chateau Neuf de Pape I got from the by-glass menu were memorable and perfect with the meal.

The level of service is above and beyond anything I have ever experienced, which was brought doubly home when my companion managed to spill most of his soup onto the table and his lap, and it was handled instantly, discretely, and professionally. A few minutes later, all was elegant calm, everything perfectly restored as if it had never happened. Wow. And did I mention that the restaurant is a visual delight, in elegant blacks and mauves? Start to finish perfection!
